Beef Cattle and Beef Carcase Competition
There's nothing like award winning livestock at the Royal Melbourne Show!
2010 Feature Breed
This year the RASV welcomes the Simmental as the feature beef breed, which will be held in conjunction with the World Simmental Congress.
Simmentals originated in Switzerland and grew to become Europe's dominant dual purpose beef/milk breed. Over the past 30 years, the Simmental breed spread to other continents, including North and South America, Africa and Australasia, where Simmentals are predominantly used for beef production.
There are over 50 million Simmentals worldwide, making the breed the second most populous world breed following Bos Indicus breeds.
Since its introduction to Australia in 1972, the Australian Simmental has developed into a breed with all-round superior performance, when used either as a pure breed or in crossbreeding programs.

Sheep and Goat Competition
There's nothing like Sheep and Goat competition at the Royal Melbourne Show!
2010 Feature Sheep Breed – Border Leicester
This year the RASV welcomes the Border Leicester as the feature sheep breed. Border Leicesters were founded in 1767 in Northumberland, England spreading across the country and becoming a common breed in the U.K by the 19th century. Imported to Australia in 1871, their name reflects the location where the breed was founded, near the border of Scotland and the use of Dishley Leicester rams for the foundation of the breed. Registered flocks can now be found across the globe including China, Russia, Spain, India and America
Their wool is used for medium to heavy weight garments and is prized by spinners due to its crimp and lustre. Border Leicesters can be used for mating with Merino ewes producing the first-cross mothers that are used in the production of prime lambs.
For further information on Border Leicesters visit www.borderleicester.com.au
