There’s nothing like the fun, free entertainment at the
Royal Melbourne Show!
Highlights
This year at the 2011 Royal Melbourne Show there was lots of free fun entertainment for the whole family. For the first time ever, the World’s Greatest Escape Artist, Dean Gunnarson, kept showgoers enthralled with his death-defying stunts on the Herald Sun Town Square, while the world champion speed tree climber entertained audiences with the Lumberjack Show, also a first in Melbourne. On The excitement continues on Coca-Cola Arena, with the Extreme Monster Truck, Toyota V6 HiLux Heroes and the ShowTime Freestyle Moto X Team keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. The fireworks spectacular, proudly presented by Channel 7, lit up the night sky with a dazzling fireworks display.
There was plenty of live music at this year’s Show with multiply Golden Guitar winners, The Davidson Brothers and BABBA, one of the best ABBA tribute bands delighting audiences. Rock the Show saw some of Melbourne’s up and coming bands take to the stage each night with Royal Parade voted the best band and taking home the prize of a day in a recording studio.
Fifi and the Flowertots™ – Rock with the Tots Live Show had younger showgoers singing and dancing as did the Rio Dance Party Stage Show. Favourite characters including Angelina Ballerina, Ben 10 and Elmo were also at the Show, along with the Disney/Pixar Cars Trucks Tour with life size Mac Truck.
Fun Interactive Activities
The 2011 Royal Melbourne Show was full of free, fun interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy. More than 15,000 Showgoers took part in the Commonwealth Bank Farm Discovery Trail with 11,000 people trying their hand at milking a cow in the Pura New Milking Barn. Other fun activities like the Little Green Thumbs saw 4,500 seedlings planted and taken home to grow while over four tons of potatoes were donated by the potato industry for the Potato Patch activity.
Other popular activities including the Animal Nursery and Click go the Shears show gave kids the opportunity to get up close to farm animals of all shapes and sizes, with over thirty lambs born during the Show.
At the Channel 9 site in the Kids Zone you could read the weather or meet some of your favourite celebrities. In the Victorian Government Exhibition, there were heaps of free activities to do and over 40,000 magnetic fish were caught in the DPI 'fishing game'.
The free entertainment for the 2012 Royal Melbourne Show will be announced in July 2012.
